Pancreatic cancer, when it obstructs the bile duct in the liver, can lead to the development of jaundice. This condition is characterized by a noticeable yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. In addition to these visible signs, jaundice can also result in the abnormal discoloration of urine, making it appear darker, as well as causing stools to become pale in color. It is worth noting that jaundice frequently manifests itself independently from any accompanying abdominal pain.

HOW DOES PANCREATITIS CAUSE JAUNDICE?

The occurrence of jaundice in patients with pancreatitis is typically attributed to damage to the liver cells or the presence of an underlying condition affecting the biliary tract. However, there are instances where the obstruction of the common duct occurs as a result of pancreatic fibrosis, edema, or the formation of a pseudocyst, even in the absence of any liver cell damage or biliary tract disease.

IS JAUNDICE COMMON IN PANCREATITIS?

Autoimmune pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis are both conditions that can cause biliary strictures, ultimately leading to the development of jaundice. When evaluating patients with relevant clinical symptoms, it is important to consider pancreatic cancer as a potential cause. While there is more extensive research on the relationship between jaundice and chronic pancreatitis as well as pancreatic cancer, the connection between jaundice and acute pancreatitis remains uncertain.

DOES ALCOHOLIC PANCREATITIS CAUSE JAUNDICE?

Alcohol use syndrome is a prevalent factor contributing to the development of both acute and chronic pancreatitis, making it one of the leading causes of this condition.
