A joint is where two bones come together. The ends of these bones are covered with protective tissue called cartilage. Cartilage is a protein substance that serves as a “cushion” between the bones of the joints. Osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis that features the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage . This can cause pain, stiffness, and other symptoms. . OA is called degenerative joint disease, degenerative arthritis, and wear-and-tear arthritis. When this condition occurs in knee joint, this is called osteoarthritis knee.

Osteoarthritis knee occurs more frequently as we age. Before age 45, osteoarthritis knee occurs more frequently in males. After 45 years of age, it occurs more frequently in females.

The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis knee include:

  • pain
  • tenderness (discomfort when pressing on the area with your fingers)
  • stiffness
  • inflammation
  • The main symptom is pain, causing loss of ability and often stiffness. The pain is typically made worse by prolonged activity and relieved by rest.
  • Stiffness is most common in the morning, and typically lasts less than thirty minutes after beginning daily activities, but may return after periods of inactivity. Osteoarthritis can cause a crackling noise (called “crepitus”) when the affected joint is moved, especially shoulder and knee joint.
  • A person may also complain of joint locking and joint instability. These symptoms would affect their daily activities due to pain and stiffness.
